Apex Updates for March
Street Hockey, GoApex, Peak Plan 2055
With the data center, yard waste changes, and utility billing making headlines along with another Council meeting coming on Tuesday, I wanted to take a second to highlight a few other topics that have fallen under the radar these past few weeks. But first, a final thought on the data center issue.
As you may have heard, tomorrow I’ll be introducing a one-year moratorium on new datacenter development - similar to what Chatham County has done. During this year, we’ll finish the work we started to update the UDO to put rules in place to address the issues that we’ve learned about through this process. If you’re not aware, modifying the UDO is an open and transparent process (defined in state law); there will be multiple required public hearings and opportunities for input along the way. I also expect the Environmental Advisory Board will play a role in shaping the new UDO regulations, as part of their existing charter.
Community Well‑Check Program
The Apex Police Department’s Community Well‑Check is an automated daily call program for residents 65+ or those with qualifying disabilities who live alone. You choose a call time; if no answer, the department calls your emergency contacts and, if needed, dispatches an officer for an in‑person check. This provides peace of mind for families and neighbors. Please register online or with a paper form so we can support those who would benefit.
Youth Street Hockey
I'm pleased to share that the Town, in partnership with the Carolina Hurricanes, is offering youth street hockey this spring at Apex Community Park for ages 5–13 (played on foot), with a 5–6 clinic and leagues for older age groups, practices starting mid‑March, games in early April, a season running through early June, and age determined as of June 30. Registration opens for residents at 9 a.m. on February 9, 2026 and for non‑residents at 9 a.m. on February 23, 2026; league fees are $55 for residents and $70 for non‑residents ($40/$55 for the 5–6 clinic), and volunteer coaches are welcome (training and background checks required).
GoApex Improvements
Beginning Saturday, April 18th, GoApex Route 1 will increase the amount of service offered, nearly doubling the weekly trip options for riders! On Mondays-Saturdays, GoApex will operate 30-minute service from 6am-7pm and hourly service from 7pm-10pm. It will also operate new hourly service on Sundays from 7am-9pm!
Peak Plan 2055 Public Forum #2
I’m a member of the Peak Plan 2055 Task Force, and we’re having our second public forum later this month. This is a great opportunity to give your input and help shape the future of Apex. Please consider attending!
Election Wrap Up
Primary Day was this past Tuesday, March 3rd. Here are some results that impact Apex:
As expected, Roy Cooper and Michael Whatley won their respective primaries for the Senate seat being vacated by Thom Tillis. This is likely to be one of the closest and most expensive Senate races in history this fall.
Congresswoman Valerie Foushee won the Democratic primary for the NC 4th Congressional District that Apex is in. She is expected to easily win re-election in the fall.
Christine Kushner and Mona Singh won the Democratic Primary for the 2 new Wake County At-Large seats. They are also both expected to easily win this fall to become the two newest County Commissioners.
What everyone is talking about in NC Politics though is the still too close to call race up in Rockingham County between Sam Page and Phil Berger. Phil Berger is one of if not the most powerful politician in North Carolina, and if he loses his primary it’ll be an earthquake. Phil Berger notably has been a big proponent of funding the Children’s Hospital in Apex.
Operation Medicine Drop
You can safely and anonymously dispose of expired or unused prescription medications any time in the permanent Operation Medicine Drop box in the Apex Police Department lobby at 205 Saunders Street to keep medications out of kids’ hands and our water system. Please bring prescription meds only in their original containers sealed in a zip-top bag (no loose pills, no syringes), containers are destroyed to protect your information, and we cannot accept over-the-counter items such as Pepto‑Bismol, eye drops, saline, chapstick, EpiPens, vitamins, sunscreens, or creams/ointments.
